What it is (and how to use it fast)

The Generative Choreographic Framework has three main "engines": the algorithmic system, the associative system, and the geometric path tracing. Choreographic principles have been developed to make the process more intuitive.

At a glance (30 seconds)

How to use it (3 steps)

  1. Choose 1 engine (or combine 2–3).
  2. Run a short score (8–16 counts), then repeat with a constraint (speed, level, quality, or space).
  3. Refine what you like into choreography, or keep it as improvisation practice. </aside>

How it started and where the ideas came from

During the creation of my choreographyTales of Life , I felt that after a while I was repeating similar patterns and steps. I started thinking about what could help me break this habit. The first idea was to use algorithmic principles to set instructions I could follow that would help me take different paths than I normally would. I was studying animation at that time, and animation principles were a big inspiration.

That's where the second idea came from. I was 34 years old, and even though my body was stronger than years ago, I also felt it was getting stiffer. I started researching a system that could help me keep my body moving smoothly and softly while maintaining movement isolation. Once again, animation principles came into play, and the path tracking from 3D software proved very useful. I started using pre-set paths and following them with different parts of my body, allowing me to engage different muscles and dynamics.

After that, I kept adding more elements, and the framework emerged—slowly becoming a system that helps generate movement and set up task-based improvisation, but also a teaching system that helps dancers understand how their body can move.
